LG QNED99 and Samsung QN900A are the top model of 8K HDR LED TVs from each of their manufacturer that released in 2021. The major difference between them is that the QN900A uses VA panel technology while the QNED99 uses IPS panel. But even so, although they use different panel technology, but they both the same backlight technology, which is mini LED with local dimming technology, though, they have difference in dimming zones. Additionally, for delivering wide color gamut, they both also use Quantum Dot Technology. LG QNED99

LG QNED99 is the highest-end model of LG’s 2021 LED TV. Unlike the lower model, it comes with 8K resolution. Although it uses IPS panel that usually has low native contrast ratio, but combination of its mini-LED backlight and local dimming features really improve its contrast ratio significantly, making it as an IPS TV that has one of the best contrast ratio. Additionally, the use of mini-LED backlight also allows it can get high-level brightness. As an IPS TV, wide viewing angles becomes its major advantages. Furthermore, it also has good motion handling, low input lags and supports some enhanced technology like VRR technology, BFI (Black Frame Insertion) technology, HDMI 2.1, etc. All of them makes it has good performance for any usage.

Samsung QN900A

Just like the LG QNED99, Samsung QN900A also comes with 8K resolution. It is one of three 8K TVs that released by Samsung in 2021 and it sits on the top. Unlike the QNED99, the QN900A uses VA panel. As we have known, the TV that uses VA panel usually has poor side viewing angle. However, since it uses an antiglare optical layer called “Ultra Viewing Angle”, its side viewing angle is much better than conventional VA TV while its contrast ratio is still extremely strong. Just like the QNED999, the QN9000A also great TVs for mixed usage. In addition it has excellent picture quality, it also has good motion handling, BFI mode, low input lags, and supports some enhanced gaming features like VRR technology, HDMI 2.1, ALLM, etc.

Additionally, although the QNED99 also has good local dimming feature, a bit better than local dimming of the Q900A. Unfortunately, as typical of IPS TV, black uniformity of the QNED99 is not so good.  On the other hand, performance of the QN900A in a dark room is great. Although its native contrast ratio is relatively lower than conventional VA TV, but its local dimming can significantly boost its contrast ratio to around 26000:1, making it is as one of LED TVs with the best contrast ratio. Fortunately, their black uniformity is not as good as most TVs with VA panel.

The use mini LED backlight really boosts its brightness level to the higher level, making them easily to fight the glare in most bright rooms. But even so, the QN900A is still better than the QNED99. This is caused QN900A has much brighter SDR Brightness than the QNED99. Additionally, the QN900A has better reflection handling than the QNED99. But even so, although not as good as the QN900A, performance of the QNED99 in a bright room is also really good. Its SDR peak brightness is bright enough to fight the glare in most bright rooms. Additionally, its reflection handling is also good enough to handling reflection in sunny window.

The LG QNED99 can show native 8K content without any issue while the QN900 cannot remove pixel dithering completely

Comes with 8K resolution, they offer four times more details picture quality than 4K TV. In the market, there may be not many native 8K content available, but they both have good 8K up-scaling engine that based on AI. So, even though the source has lower resolution, you can still enjoy them in 4K quality. Nevertheless, overall, the QNED99 is a bit better than the QN900A. The Samsung QN900A may have better gray uniformity that makes it is better than the QNED99 when showing a big area with uniform color like field in sports. But on the other hand, the QNED99 has better side viewing angle. Additionally, it can also show 4K content and 8K content a bit better than the QN900A. Since they are not 4K TV, they cannot show native 4K image as better as 4K TV because it is up-scaled. But even so, on the screen of the QNED99, there still aren’t dithering or artefact. Meanwhile, on the screen of the QN900A, there is some dithering or minor artefact, although they are very hard to notice. The LG QNED99 has good HDR performance, but the QN900A is better

Both of the LG QNED99 and Samsung QN900A can deliver wide gamut and their color gamut is almost similar. But even so, its higher contrast ratio and brighter HDR peak brightness makes the QN900A has better color volume. Additionally, it also can show HDR images with smoother color gradient than the QNED99. That is not only that, its deeper black and better black uniformity also makes it can show better shadow details of HDR images than the QNED99. Additionally, the Samsung QN900A also has much brighter HDR peak brightness, which is around 1500 nits. This makes highlight look more standout on its screen than on the screen of the QNED99 that has HDR peak brightness around 800 nits. On the other hand, although not as good as QN900A, HDR performance of the LG QNED99 is also good. Its HDR peak brightness is still bright enough to make highlight of HDR images pop. Additionally, its contrast ratio also strong enough to show shadow details of HDR images as details expected in HDR.

They are equally great TVs in handling motion. They both have great pixel response time and their response time is almost the same. They both also have native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. However, the QN900A also supports VRR technology that compatible with some gaming feature like FreeSync, GSync, and HDMI Forum VRR while the QNED99 doesn’t support. They also can do the same great in handling 24p judder. Meanwhile, a bit advantage of the QN900A is that it supports both 60 Hz and 120 Hz BFI mode while the QNED99 only supports 60 Hz BFI mode, not 120 Hz. As we have known, BFI can help to improve motion appearance by reducing persistence blur. And since the QNED99 doesn’t support 120 Hz BFI mode, when it is showing fast motion images at 120 Hz, persistence blur that may be visible cannot be removed completely.

The QNED99 has excellent input lags in Game Mode but the QN900A even has better

Both of the Samsung QN900A and LG QNED99 has excellent input lags in Game mode on both 60 fps and 120 fps games. THis certainly will please most gamers. Additionally, they are also equipped with 4 HDMI ports where all of their HDMI ports already support HDMI 2.1, which means it is great. And as a 8K TV, their HDMI ports certainly support 8K resoluti. But even so, they only support 8K @24 Hz, 30 Hz, and 60 Hz, while for the 8K @ 120 Hz, they don’t support yet.

As we have known, VRR technology can improve gaming performance of a TV by reducing screen tearing effect. On the other hand, even though the QNED99 doesn’t support VRR technology, but its performance still please most gamers.

Overall, both of the Samsung QN900A and QNED99 are great TVs for any usage. Whether they are used for watching movies in a dark room, watching sports and TV shows in a bright room, or playing games, their performance is really satisfactory. Although they use different panel technology (QNED99 uses IPS panel and QN900A uses VA panel), but their performance is not much different. They both have good side viewing angle, good contrast ratio, color gamut, motion handling, input lags, etc. But of course, each of them has advantages and disadvantage to each other. So, which is a better choice between them? This certainly is depending on your won preferences. If you have a large room and often watch TVs with a group of your family, the QNED99 is better. But on the other hand, if you often watch movies in a dark room or you need a bright TVs, the QN900A certainly is better. Now, the decision comes back to you.
