Samsung QN90B vs QN90A Review : What New Features are Offered by the newer model?

Samsung QN90B is as high-end model of Samsung’s 2022 neo QLED 4K. On the other hand, the Samsung QN90A is its predecessor, also the high-end model of Samsung’s neo QLED 4K, but it was released in 2021. With other words, the Samsung QN90B replaces the QN90A in the market. As we have known, the difference between neo QLED and conventional QLED is that neo QLED already use mini LED as their backlight while conventional QLED uses standard LED. Samsung QN90B

As we have mentioned above, the Samsung QN90B is the flagship of Samsung’s 2022 QLED 4K TV. It is part of Samsung’s neo QLED, which combine mini-LED backlight and quantum dot panel technology.  In the Samsung’s 2022 lineup, it sits between the QN85B that has similar performance but come with ADS panel and QN95B, the flagship of Samsung’s 2022 neo QLED 4K TV. Samsung QN90B is a great TV for mixed usage overall. It has outstanding contrast ratio and excellent local dimming feature, making its performance in a dark room is great. Additionally, it also has exceptionally peak brightness in SDR and HDR, making it is easily to fight the glare in a bright room and also small highlight can be shown incredibly on its screen. That is not only that, its good color gamut and gradient handling makes HDR images displayed on its screen looks vivid and life-like. Samsung QN90A

The Samsung QN90A is the predecessor of the QN90A. It is also part of the Samsung’s 2021 neo QLED and sits between QN85A and QN95A. You need to know, neo QLED is first introduced in 2021. As we have mentioned, neo QLED combine use mini light as their backlight, improving peak brightness significantly. This makes the QN90A including the brightest TV in 2021. Like the QN90B, the Samsung QN90A also have excellent contrast ratio. So, besides its performance in a bright room is great, performance of the QN90A is also great. Additionally, it can also produce wide color gamut, making HDR images displayed on its screen also looks vivid and lifelike. That is not only that, although not as good as ADS or IPS panel, the use of Ultra Viewing Angle optical panel makes it has good side viewing angle while its contrast ratio remains excellent. The Samsung QN90A also has good motion handling makes fast moving images looks smooth on its screen. And combination of its low input lags and VRR technology makes it pleases most gamers.

Both Samsung QN90B and QN90A are great TVs for dark room usage. The use of “Ultra Viewing Angle” optical layer may make their native contrast ratio is relatively lower than conventional VA TV, but its local dimming can significantly improve their contrast ratio. With around 20000:1 for the QN90B and around 25000:1 for the QN90A, they both can produce deep black. So, although they are set in d ark room, black produced by them still look black. Both of them also have local dimming that can do a great job in minimizing blooming. Both of them also have good black uniformity. With local dimming enabled, there may be blooming around bright objects in a dark scene, but this should not be very noticeable.  Meanwhile, compare between them, the Samsung QN90A is better. In addition to it has higher contrast ratio, the QN90A also has a bit better black uniformity than the QN90B.

Both of the Samsung QN90B and QN90A have excellent peak brightness thanks to mini LED backlight

Performance of the Samsung QN90B and QN90A in a bright room is really great. Both have fantastic SDR peak brightness thanks to mini-LED backlight. With real scene, the QN90A can hits around 1090 nits while the QN90B can hits around 1200 nits. Even when showing small highlight, the QN90B can hits brighter than 2000 nits while the QN90A hits around 1350 nits. Of course, this makes them can easily fight the glare in most bright room. But just like LED TVS with local dimming, the larger areas of bright scene are dimmed considerably by their ABL. This makes broadcast with large colors like Hockey or Basketball looks to be more-dim. Nevertheless, it is still brighter than most TVs. In addition to they have fantastic peak brightness, they also have excellent reflection handling. Combination of their fantastic peak brightness and reflection handling ensures you to watch TV in a bright room without any issue about glare or reflection.

The use of “Ultra Viewing Angle” optical layer makes their side viewing angle is better than most TV with VA panel

Both of the Samsung QN90A and QN90B have good 4K up-scaling engine. So, although the source is non 4K content, they can still show them in 4K quality fairly well. Even when the source has 480p or 720p, the picture displayed on their screen looks very good with small details are still preserved well. The higher resolution of the source, the picture displayed is finer. Additionally, the use of Ultra Viewing Angle” optical layer may make their contrast ratio is relatively low, but on the other hand, this makes both have good side viewing angle. They both also have decent gray uniformity that makes sports looks well on their screen. Both of them have good picture quality overall. But compare between them, the QN90B has  a bit better side viewing angle and gray uniformity than the QN90A.

Samsung QN90A and QN90B have good HDR performance

HDR Performance of the Samsung QN90A and QN90B are great, allowing you to enjoy true cinematic HDR experience. In dark side, their performance may not as good as OLED TV, but they also have good contrast ratio, local dimming, and black uniformity, makes shadow details of HDR images can be shown without a lot of crushed black. They also have good color gamut, volume, and gradient, making HDR images displayed on their screen looks vivid and lifelike with smooth color gradient. That is exceptional is their SDR peak brightness where both are able to show bright scenes of HDR images brighter than 1500 nits. In certain scene, the QN90B is even able to show small highlight around 2000 nits. Due to their ABL (Auto Brightness Limiter), larger bright scenes may be dimmer, but they are still bright enough to give good HDR experience as intended by content creator.

Their Performance in Handling Motion is Equally Great

Both of the Samsung QN90A and QN90B have excellent pixel response time, which is around 8 ms for the QN90B and around 9 ms for the QN90A. Although it is not as low as OLED TVs, but it is still low enough to make fast motion looks very smooth and only produce a very short blur trail that is not very noticeable. Blur that may be visible is more caused by persistence. Meanwhile since, both have local dimming, to dim their backlight, both use PWM Dimming system and in most mode, they flicker at 960 Hz. Since they flicker at such a high frequency, you should not notice it. Nevertheless, in certain condition, flicker is needed to reduce persistence blur, particularly with dimming frequency that match to the frame rate of content. And in certain mode, both of them can flicker at 120 Hz or 60 Hz. This will improve their motion appearance. By default, both of the Samsung QN90A and QN90B also have native 120 Hz Refresh Rate panel. However, they also already support VRR technology that is compatible with some advanced gaming features like FreeSync, GSync, and HDMI Forum VRR.

Both Samsung QN90B and QN90A have great input lags in Game Mode

Both of them have 4 HDMI Ports as their major connectivity. All of their HDMI ports also already support HDM 2.1, HDM 2.0, CEC, HDCP 2.0 etc. Talking about their input lags, Samsung QN90B and QN90A have excellent input lags in Game Mode and their input lags are similar. With 60 fps Games, input lags of the QN90B are about 11 ms while QN90A is about 10 ms. With 120 fps games, their input lags are even faster, which are around 6 ms. This is low enough to makes any games feels responsively, even for fast paced games that requires fast reflexes.

Audio Performance of the Samsung QN90B and QN90A is equally good

The Samsung QN90B and QN90A have built-in 4.2.2 sound setup with total sound output of 60 watts. Nevertheless, although they are equipped with the same built-in speaker setup, but sound of the QN90A also can get louder and in general, its sound quality is also better than QN90B. As their smart TV platform, both run Tizen OS. The difference is that the QN90A runs 2021 version while the QN90B runs 2022 version. There is a minor change on user interface offered by the 2022 version over the 2021 version.  If on 2021 version, the entire screen is filled by bars, on 2022 version, it is changed by interface, making it is easier to find your favorite content. Meanwhile, talking about apps, both of them have great selection of apps. But even so, the 2020 version also comes with some additional apps like Google duo, etc. And as their controller, both of Samsung QN90A comes with 2021 model of Samsung Smart Controller and the QN90B comes with 2022 model.  Nevertheless, they are identical.

Both of the Samsung QN90B and QN90A are great TVs for watching movies in a dark room. Combination of their excellent contrast ratio, good local dimming, and great black uniformity makes dark scene look excellent, even if they are set in a dark room. They both also can play 24p movies from any source with judder-free. Their fast pixel response time may make movies appears to stutter due each frame is hold longer. But this should not be a problem since this can be solved easily by enabling their BFI or Motion Interpolation. Both are great TVs for watching movies overall, but the QN90A is a bit better due it has a bit better dark room performance.

Both of them are great TVs for mixed usage, but overall the QN90A is even a bit better than theQN90B

Overall, the Samsung QN90A and QN90B are great TVs for any usage. Whether you use them for watching movies, TV Shows, Sports, or playing games, their performance is equally great. They have good side viewing angle coverage while their contrast ratio remains good. Additionally, their HDR and SDR peak brightness is also fantastic and there are not many TVs can match their peak brightness. They also have good motion handling, low input lags, and etc. Meanwhile, as a newer model, the Samsung QN90B offers some improvement over the predecessor QN90A in some certain aspects like peak brightness, etc. However, in other certain aspects like contrast and black uniformity, response time, etc, its performance is even a bit worse. But in general, their performance is similar. So, which is a better choice between them? The decision certainly comes back to you according to your own preferences. But as we have known, the Samsung QN90B comes to replace the Samsung QN90A in the market.
