Samsung RU7300 vs RU7100 Review

Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 are the budget models of the Samsung’s 2019 4K HDR LED TV lineup. As the entry level TVs, of course, the features and technology offered by them are not as many as the higher models. In comparison with the higher series, they lack quantum dot panel, local dimming features, built-in voice navigation, and more. But even so, considering the price that offered, performance and features offered by them still can be said fairly well. In the market, the Samsung RU7100 comes in many screen size options including 43 inches (UN43RU7100), 50 inches (UN50RU7100), 55 inches (UN55RU7100), 58 inches (UN58RU7100), 65 inches (UN65RU7100), and 75 inches (UN75RU7100). On the other hand, the RU7300 comes in 2 screen sizes options only, which are 55 inches (UN55RU7300) and 65 inches (UN65RU7300). With the same screen sizes (UN55RU7300 vs UN55RU7100, UN65RU7300 vs UN65RU7100), the RU7300 is priced around a hundred dollar more expensive than the RU7100. So, what are their differences and which one is a better choice between them.

Technologies and Features of the Samsung RU7100 and RU7300

Panel Technology

The Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 both use the same panel technology. They both use VA (Vertical Alignment) panel technology which make them have excellent native contrast ratio and can produce deep dark. But as we have known, the TV with VA panel usually have poor side viewing angle coverage, so they both are not suitable when used in a room with wide seating arrangement. Just we have mentioned above, as the entry level TV, they both also lack local dimming feature that can improve their dark room performance. But even so, for maximizing its performance in producing black, they both are powered by UHD Dimming technology, a software-based dimming system developed by Samsung for their 4K TV lineup. Meanwhile, for maximizing their performance in producing colors, instead of Dynamic Crystal Color of RU8000 or Quantum Dot of the QLED TV lineup, they both are powered by PurColor technology.

Image Processor

4K UHD Processor

As their image processor, the Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 are powered by the same image processor, which is an image processor called 4K UHD Processor.  This processor can do great job when processing image from any source.  With built-in 4K up-scaling engine, it is able to show non 4K content in 4K quality almost as detail as native 4K source.

HDR Supports

HDR10+

Both Samsung RU7100 and RU7300 also already support HDR. They support not only one HDR format. IN addition to HDR10 format, they both also support HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), allow you to watch TV shows in HDR quality. Additionally, they both also already support HDR10+, an enhancement of HDR10 format that already use dynamic metadata. But unfortunately, they both don’t support Dolby Vision, the other HDR format that also already uses dynamic metadata.

Motion Technology

For maximizing their performance in handling motion both the RU7300 and RU7100 are powered by Advanced Motion Rate 120. But essentially they both have native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. This certainly makes them don’t support 120 fps content or are only able to interpolate low frame rate content to 60 Hz.  . Additionally, they both have an optional Black Frame Insertion Mode that can help to make motion crisper. But unfortunately, they both lack Variable Refresh Rate technology found on the higher series like RU8000 or QLED TV lineup that can improve their game experience.

Smart TV Platform

Tizen 2019 OS

As their smart TV platform, just like their models of Samsung’s 2019 TV lineup, they both run the Tizen 2019 or well known as Smart Hub and are powered by a quad core processor. As we have known, the interface of Tizen OS is easy to use and relatively smooth. Some issues found on the previous version such as lag in animation, dropped frame, freeze occasionally can be minimized in this version. This platform also has good selection of pre-installed apps. There are VoD service like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Videos, and others, Live TVs, Web Browser, Games, and others. It also has an apps store called Samsung Apps store that provides tons of downloadable apps you can download them from your Samsung TV. In addition to SmartThing, it now also already works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and also AirPlay 2.

But unfortunately, as a budget TVs, they both lack some feature such as voice control. As their controller, they both are only equipped with basic remote that doesn’t has built-in microphone for voice navigation. But even so, the lack of voice control is not just its remote ability, but they indeed don’t have built-in voice navigation found on the higher series like RU8000, Q60R, or higher series.

The Difference

Flat vs Curved panel

There are not many differences between the Samsung RU7300 and RU7100. The only difference between them is about their screen shape where the RU7100 comes with flat panel while the RU7300 comes with curved panel. And as we have known, the excepting of the aesthetic, there are not a lot of benefits offered by the curved panel over the flat panel.

Samsung RU7300 vs RU7100 Performance

Contrast Ratio and Black Level

The Samsung RU7100 and RU7300 both have excellent native contrast ratio. Their native contrast ratio is higher than 5500:1, high enough to make them can produce deep black. So, even though they both are set in a dark room, black produced by them still look really black. Additionally, black produced by them are also dark enough to show shadow details of HDR images the way they should be in HDR. But unfortunately, they both don’t have local dimming feature that can further improve their dark room performance. Additionally, lack of local dimming also makes them are not able to minimize blooming when they are showing highlight in a dark scene. So, when they are showing a movie with subtitle, there is noticeable blooming around subtitle.

Peak Brightness

The Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 have similar peak brightness where they both can reach around 300 nits. The good thing is that their peak brightness is relatively constant at any windows sizes, except 2% window (2% of screen is white while the rest is black) where their peak brightness is dimmed by TV’s Frame Dimming down to around 160 nits. With SDR content, their peak brightness is actually not too bright and only enough to fight the glare in average-lit or dimmed room. This certainly makes them only suitable for a room with this light condition.

Meanwhile, with HDR content, their peak brightness certainly is way less bright. With around 300 nits, it is not quite bright to make HDR details pops. Additionally, since on 2% window, their peak brightness is dimmed by TV’s frame dimming down to around 160 nits, this makes small highlight doesn’t look stand out the way they should in HDR. Overall, their HDR peak brightness is very disappointing. But even so, since most budget TVs also have peak brightness that is not much different to their peak brightness, of course this should not be a serious problem for them.

Color Gamut and Color Volume

Lack of Quantum Dot technology or Dynamic Crystal Color found on the higher series makes them cannot produce wide color gamut. Their color gamut is only good enough to cover Rec.709 color space that required by SDR content. Meanwhile, in DCI P3 uv color space, their color gamut only can cover around 84%. In DCI P3 xy, their color gamut even only can cover around 75% of color space. This means, their color gamut is not wide enough for great HDR performance.

Additionally, their color volume is also disappointing, which is expected for a TV without a wide color gamut.  They both may have good excellent contrast ratio, but they both cannot produce dark, saturated colors fairly well. On the top side, they both cannot also produce bright saturated colors. Nevertheless, although their color performance is not so good, particularly for HDR content, for a budget TV, their color performance can still be said good.

Color Gradient

While their color gamut and color volume is not too good for HDR content, they both have good color gradient. With HDR content, color gradient of images displayed on their screen looks very smooth. Some moderate banding may still be noticeable in some certain shades of colors particularly in almost all dark colors, but in normal content, this should not be noticeable. Additionally, just like higher models, they both also have “Digital Clean View” feature that can help to remove banding. But unfortunately, on both RU7300 and RU7100, this feature cannot work as good as on higher series like RU8000 or Q60R.

Side Viewing Angle

As is typical of LED TVS with VA panel, both Samsung RU7100 and RU7300 also have poor side viewing angle coverage. Started at around 15 degrees off center and front, their black level will rise quickly. As you increase your viewing angle, black will tend to look gray. Additionally, at around 25 degrees, colors also start to shift and finally, at around 35 degrees, the brightness will begin to fade. This means, when viewed from the side, the picture displayed on their screen will look less accurate. This certainly makes them is not an ideal TV when used in a room with wide seating arrangement. So, if you need a TV with good viewing angle, you can go to IPS TV.

Motion Handling

Both Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 only have decent pixel response time, which is around 20 ms. The result, when they are playing fast moving images like sports or fast games, there is noticeable blur trail following fast moving object. Additionally, in addition to blur trail that caused by its pixel response time, there might be duplications that caused by their backlight flicker. Nevertheless, for most people, this should be hard to notice.

You need to know, to dim their backlight, they both use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming system. But even so, their dimming frequency is depending on the picture mode setting. In “Movie” mode with “Auto Motion” is disabled, their dimming frequency is 240 Hz where this is high enough to make backlight flicker is almost noticeable. But on the other hand, this can cause some duplication in motion. In other mode like “Game”, Standard”, or other, their dimming frequency change to 120 Hz. Additionally, set the “Auto Motion Plus” to “Custom” also cause their dimming frequency change to 120 Hz. In this condition, this will make motion slightly crisper, but on the other hand, this will also cause some duplication. Meanwhile, when their BFI mode is enabled by activating “LED Clear Motion”, this dimming frequency will change to 60 Hz. This can help to make motion crisper, but on the other hand, this will make backlight flicker is more noticeable and may be distracting some people who sensitive to flicker.

Meanwhile, when playing 24p movies, they both cannot remove judder completely from any source, even when the source is native 24p movies like DVD or Blu Ray movies where most TVs usually can remove judder from this source. This certainly is unexpected. Nevertheless, this performance is similar to NU7100 predecessor.

Input Lags

As we have mentioned, both Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 only have native 60 Hz refresh rate panel. This means, they both are only able to play 60 fps content or lower. But even so, they both supports most common resolution including 1440p @ 60Hz. Additionally, they both also have excellent input lags in “Game” mode. Regardless the resolution of the sources, with 60 fps content, their input lag is around 10 ms. This certainly is low enough to make them are very responsive for any games, even for fast paced games that require fast reflexes. But unfortunately, unlike the higher models of Samsung’s 2019 TV, they both don’t support any VRR technology that can improve their game experience. Additionally, their HDMI ports don’t also support ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), so to get the low latency mode when you are playing a game, you must change the TV mode manually.

Conclusion

For Watching Movies

Both Samsung RU7100 and RU7300 actually good native contrast ratio that means this is great for watching movies in a dark room. However, they both don’t have any local dimming features that can further improve their performance in a dark room. Additionally, they both don’t also able to remove 24p judder from any sources. So, although their performance in a dark room is good, but for watching movies, overall, their performance is only decent.

For Watching Sports

Performance of Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 when used for watching sports is also only decent. They both may have good pixel response time that makes motion looks smooth with only small blur trail. Additionally, they both also have good gray uniformity, allow you to watch your favorite sports without dirty screen effect. But they both only have decent peak brightness that makes them only suitable when used for watching sports in average-lit or dim room. Meanwhile, in a bright room, their peak brightness is not bright enough to fight the glare. Additionally, they both also have poor side viewing angle, so if you watch a big game with a group of your friend or family, some of you may get less accurate picture.

For Playing Games

Both Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 are great TVs for playing games. They both have excellent input lags in Game Mode, allow you to play any game responsively without laggy. Additionally, they both also have good motion handling, makes fast games looks very smooth on their screen with only a bit blur. They both also support most common resolution including 1440p that means it is great. But a bit unfortunate, they both don’t any VRR technology like FreeSync or others that can improve their games experience like the ones found on the higher models like RU8000 or Q60R. But overall, their performance when used for playing games is great.

HDR Experience

Just like other budget TVs, HDR performance of the Samsung RU71000 and RU7300 is fairly disappointing. They both may support not only one HDR format. Additionally, they both may have excellent native contrast ratio that allows them can produce deep dark, but they lack local dimming features that can further improve their performance in showing dark scene of HDR images. On the other hand, their peak brightness is also not bright enough to make HDR details pops the way they should be. Not only that, since their peak brightness on 2% window dimmed by their Frame Dimming feature, they both are not also able to show small highlight stand out the way they should in HDR. And finally, their color reproduction is also not good enough to make HDR looks colorfully as its creator intended.

Summary

As we have discussed a lot above, overall, their performance is only decent for any usage. The limited performance in some aspects like peak brightness, color reproductions, and others makes picture produced by them is not as good as the higher-end models of Samsung’s 2019 TV. Meanwhile, that stands out from the Samsung RU7300 and RU7100 is about their native contrast ratio and low input lags. But unfortunately, this is not offset by good performance from other aspects. But even so, considering they both are only a budget TV, of course, their performance can still be said good for their price range.

So, which is a better choice between them? As we have discussed a lot above, the excepting of their panel shape, they both have same technologies and features. Additionally, their performance and picture quality is also not much different. This means, except the aesthetic, there is not a lot of benefits offered by the RU7300 over the RU7100 despite with the same screen, the RU7300 is sold more expensive than the RU7100.  Now, the decision certainly comes back to you according to your own preferences. If you don’t mind to spend hundred dollars more to get the aesthetic of curved TV, the RU7300 is not a wrong choice. But even so, if you only focus on performance and picture quality, the RU7100 certainly is a better considering it has cheaper price.
